I’m a professional flutist with over 15 years of teaching and playing. I perform with the flute & guitar ensemble, The Cypress Duo. I live in Wilmington, North Carolina.
I have played in over a dozen symphony orchestras including the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, Panama City POPS orchestra (FL), the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra (TN) and most recently the Wilmington Symphony. I write an online newsletter dedicated to the flute and flute pedagogy, The Flute Examiner.
I believe the flute is an extension of one’s own voice. I focus on nurturing each of my student’s unique capabilities by creating individualized teaching strategies. My ultimate goal to create life-long musicians. My students learn the best practices for sound production (tone), kinesthetic awareness (posture), and how to speak their musical ideas with confidence.
I have held two teaching assistantships with both Dr. Shelley Binder (Univ. of TN) and Eva Amsler (Florida State University). I earned my Doctorate in Music from Florida State University in the fall of 2016. My studies extend to somatic practices, including yoga. I earned a teaching certificate (RYT-200) in yoga in 2012 and have continued my studies in a variety of styles. I teach a gentle yoga class at the Wildacres Flute Retreat every summer in Little Switzerland, NC.
